New Year, New Referrals! We have quite a few referrals that we have added in the last few months. Please take the time to review these new referrals, as well as some others that are good to keep in mind, especially during these colder months.
NEW REFERRALS:
- 988 Lifeline Videophone – the 988 Lifeline now offers video counseling for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. We are not answering this line, but it would be a good referral to give if someone calls about someone else who is hearing impaired.
- New York State Hate and Bias Prevention Unit – a hotline that people can call to report discrimination if they are a victim of bias or hate crimes.
- PsychologyToday – a free website that provides listings for therapists, psychiatrists, support groups, and treatment centers. This could be useful for out of area callers as another resource besides their local hotline.
- Long Island EMDR – formerly known as Suffolk Family Therapy, LI EMDR is a small group practice of therapists that offer both telehealth and in-person appointments. They are a short-wait referral and are in the process of adding medication management to their services.
- YouthLine – Teen Support – a national 24/7 hotline for teenagers that is answered by teens from 1-7pm (answered by adults at all other times).
- org – website to get information on Narcan/Naloxone trainings and kits across the U.S.
- Maloney, Laura, LCSW – former LICC counselor (who went by the name Valerie) has opened her own telehealth-only private practice! She currently has openings for new clients and is listed under the short-wait referrals.
- Victory Recovery Partners – not a new referral, but they just opened up a new location in Hicksville. Victory is an outpatient recovery center with several locations in Nassau and Suffolk.
- PM Pediatric Care – counseling agency serving clients age 5-26, both in-person and via telehealth. It is considered a short-wait referral and appointments can usually be made within 72 hours.
REFERRAL REMINDERS & FYIs:
- Warm Bed Hotline – this is not a separate referral, but it is a direct line to Nassau County DSS (after hours) emergency housing. This direct line only operates during the winter and has been reactivated for the season.
- Warming/Cooling Centers – available for anyone who needs to get out of the elements on days of extreme weather.
- Mobile Recovery Unit/Central Nassau Guidance – a mobile clinic for substance use treatment, this would be a more appropriate referral to give to Nassau County residents than the Mobile Crisis Unit if substance abuse is the primary issue and the client is looking for same-day help.
- **New York State Addiction Hopeline/OASAS – The “availability dashboard” on the website allows people to find inpatient (including housing) and outpatient treatment openings throughout the state by county in real time.
- FREE (Family Residences & Essential Enterprises, Inc.) – Offers a multitude of services to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental illness and traumatic brain injury.
CATEGORY REMINDERS:
- Time Sensitive – We have a few time-sensitive categories that can be used for clients who need to see someone ASAP or only have weekend availability:
- Weekend Hours
- Walk-In-Mental Health and Walk-In-Substance Abuse
- Short Wait-Mental Health and Short Wait-Substance Abuse
- Emergency – Food – For low-income clients and senior citizens that do not have access to food, especially when we have inclement weather that can limit people’s ability to get out, we have some referrals like Island Harvest and Harry Chapin that offer mobile food pantries and can deliver perishable and non-perishable items to people in need.
- We also have a Meals On Wheels category that includes a couple of referrals for senior citizens in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
REFERRALS OF THE YEAR:
Now that 2023 is in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at the referrals that were given out the most throughout the year! The most popular referrals were Mobile Crisis and other hotlines like Response and NYC WELL/988, but we also had five referrals that were given out over 100 times. Keep in mind that these are not necessarily the best referrals for every situation, but they are agencies that offer a large range of services that would be appropriate for a lot of calls. The award for most popular referral goes to Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services Inc., which was given out a total of 144 times in 2023! Please see our runners up below.
- Harmony Healthcare Long Island (126)
- Mental Health Association of Nassau County (121)
- NAMI New York State (116)
- New Horizon Counseling Center (114)
