Special thanks to Christine for presenting her in-service training on different treatment modalities! This season’s newsletter focuses on some of those modalities that we discussed, along with new categories that have been added, and some reminders about categories and referrals that we’ve already had. There have also been a few changes with some of our existing referrals. Please take some time to review these categories and referral descriptions and restrictions.

    MODALITY CATEGORIES AND REFERRAL REMINDERS:

Here are some of the categories that we’ve had for a while, as well as a few specific referrals for each. There are quite a few referrals that offer CBT and/or DBT, and the list below is only a snippet of what we have available.

    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)
      • Long Island EMDR
      • Therapy My Way
      • Wavelengths Psychology
    • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
      • Evolve Psychiatry
      • TMS Long Island
    • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
      • Nassau Psychology
      • Advanced Center for Psychotherapy
      • Healing & Growth Counseling
    • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
      • Long Island DBT Group
      • Long Island Counseling Services
      • Center for Cognitive & Dialectical Behavior Therapy

    NEW CATEGORIES:

We have added a few new categories as well. Please note that these categories may not be fully comprehensive at this point, as it will take some time to review all applicable referrals. We are also in the process of looking into adding more referrals for these categories.

    • Depression – Treatment Resistant
    • Creative Arts Therapy
    • Home-Based Services
    • Peer Support

    NEW AND CHANGED REFERRALS:

    • Stony Brook Cancer Center – in addition to providing medical care for cancer patients, this referral also helps with financial and insurance related questions and offers support groups for patients and their families.
    • We have also added two new referrals providing Home-Based Services for youth aged 5-21 who are dealing with mental health challenges. They are very similar, but Bright Futures works with medically fragile youth, whereas Lodestar Children’s Services does not. Services include in-home therapy, psychosocial rehabilitation, respite, and caregiver/family support.
    • Asperger/Autism Network is now the Association for Autism and Neurodiversity (AANE). They no longer have physical locations on Long Island, but they still offer virtual support groups for adults, teens, parents, grandparents and families.
    • Anderson Counseling Center is now Kaitlyn Schaal Mental Health Counseling. Kaitlyn is a former LICC volunteer who recently took over this practice. She works with two other licensed mental health counselors to provide counseling both in person and via telehealth for a variety of issues.
    • The Charles Evans Center is now CEC Health Care and they have opened a new office in Seaford. The name Charles Evans Center is still included for now, while we get used to the new name. Note that some of their services are only available at certain locations, which is listed accordingly in the referral.
    • Huntington Bank – due to some misinformation on Google, we often get calls on the Huntington Hotline from people looking for Huntington Bank. Since telling callers to Google the number isn’t exactly helpful, we’ve added it as a referral with the phone number to speak to a customer service representative. This referral can be found in the “*HUNTINGTON HOTLINE” and “Financial Issues” categories and is only intended for those callers who are reaching the wrong number.

In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Month, below are a few former LICC volunteers who have gone on to open their own practices that we have listed in our referrals:

    • Damaskinos, Dena-LMHC, CRC, CASAC
    • Maloney, Laura, LCSW
    • Vivona, Nicole, LCSW-R, CASAC
    • Davis, Marc-MS, LMHCwho also wrote an E-book entitledThe Alchemy Approach: Tips, techniques, and interventions for clinicians working with patients suffering from suicidality”
