Hello Counselors,
Please check out the new referral category “Order of Protection” that is now listed in our referrals database.
Under this category, you will see a few courts that are listed. I updated “Nassau County Family Court”, and added “Suffolk County Family Court”, “Nassau County Supreme Court”, “Suffolk County Supreme Court” and finally “NYS Unified Court System”.
To summarize, there are two types of orders of protection that an intimate partner or family member can obtain. Regular orders of protection are filed in Family Court. If someone is worried about someone becoming violent and knows they have weapons, and wants the weapons confiscated, then an Extreme Risk Protection Order can be filed. This is only filed in Supreme Court.
All referrals are cross referenced, so no matter if you choose “family court” or “supreme court” or “unified court system”, the information on these orders is exactly the same. I added “NYS Unified Court System” for those outside of Nassau and Suffolk counties.
All pertinent websites are included in these referrals, so callers can download the appropriate paperwork to bring to court. Please give out the website listed within the summary of the referral if they need more information.
Anybody can file on behalf of themselves without an attorney, and can ask the court clerk or court advocate for assistance!
Thank you for your dedication to always learning about new referrals and please ask Administrative Staff if you have questions.
Kindly,
Christine
