    Hi Volunteers,

Sometimes, callers are worried about someone in their life who is a danger to self or others, and has access to firearms. I did some research on orders of protection and I think most of us may be aware of “red flag laws” in New York State.  The formal name for this type of law is:

    “Extreme Risk Protection Order”

Anybody, including a family member, can ask for this type of order for someone who is a danger to self or others and has access to firearms. If the order is granted, the firearms can be confiscated for a period of time.   There are forms that have to be filled out online, printed out, and then brought to court.  The court who oversees this is the Supreme Court of the county where the identified individual lives.  I intend to add this to our referrals and also to the manual, however, I wanted to put this message here in case someone needs this information this week.

If you want to refer someone so they can complete the application for an Extreme Risk Protection Order,  have them go to this website, which explains everything step by step:

    ww2.nycourts.gov/erpo

Provide this website as you see it, this is not an error.

Stay tuned, as this will be reflected in Infobase soon.

    Thank you,

    Christine
