Fall is a season full of changes – the sun sets earlier, temperatures get cooler, and the leaves turn all kinds of pretty colors as winter approaches. Our referrals are just like the fall, and there have been a lot of changes over the last few months. We have also added a few new referrals and made a major system update with the new map feature that many of you have already found to be quite helpful. Please take some time to read through these changes and familiarize yourself with the referrals below.
THE MAP: a map will appear at the bottom of the search results with pins for each referral’s location so you can see where the agencies are and how close they are to the caller’s town. Please note that this map reflects the addresses on file for each referral, and referrals with an undisclosed address, such as Nassau Haven, will not show up on the map. Also, some referrals only provide certain services at specific locations, so be sure to thoroughly read through the description before providing it based on location.
NEW REFERRALS & CATEGORIES:
- AbortionFinder – a website providing information on abortion laws in each state, as well as resources if someone needs an abortion out of state. Financial assistance is provided to assist with travel and lodging, etc. so that an individual can access safe and legal abortion care.
- All-Options – a national peer-support line for those with concerns related to the spectrum of reproductive health, including abortion, pregnancy, post-abortion counseling, parenting, infertility and adoption.
- Suffolk Behavioral Health – a new small group practice, specializing in trauma, veterans, HIV, substance use, personality disorders and high-risk clients. In-person and telehealth sessions are provided, and children as young as 4 can be seen.
- Cohen, Sydney – LMHC – a solo private practice that only provides telehealth at this time. Sydney has a particular interest in working with young adults and sees clients who need assistance with working through life transitions and anxiety. She is trauma certified and will work with individuals who present with suicidal ideation.
- “Alternative Treatments/Therapy” – Still a work in progress, but this will be a broader category that will include various types of non-traditional counseling/therapeutic modalities, such as Equine Therapy, Art Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and more.
- “Online/Chat Counseling” and “Chat/Online Counseling” – Not to be confused with the “Telehealth/Virtual” category, Chat Counseling referrals are text-based crisis and counseling services provided by various hotlines, as well as BetterHelp.com.
CHANGES & UPDATES:
- **Mobile Crisis Unit-Nassau County** – MCU’s services have not changed – this is more of a clarification: the Nassau County MCU does not provide counseling; they perform mental health safety checks to assess if someone is safe to stay in the community or if they need to go to the hospital. If a caller just needs to speak to someone in person, “Walk-In-Mental Health” referrals would be more appropriate to give. We have also decided, in an effort to reduce confusion, that we should not provide MCU as a referral to clients who have accepted a follow-up call from LICC. Please do not provide this referral to KCs calling about themselves unless they are saying that they are feeling like they might need to be hospitalized but are unsure. The referral has been updated to reflect these changes and other restrictions.
- Maryhaven (formerly Maryhaven Center of Hope) now only serves Suffolk, providing an array of programs and resources for the special needs population, including a residential program, day habilitation, and employment resources for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
- Maryhaven Center of Hope – Recovery House in Uniondale is now Mercy Recovery House. Availability is currently limited, but it can still be given out as that availability may change. Remember that **New York State Addiction Hopeline/OASAS has an availability dashboard on their website that allows people to find inpatient and outpatient treatment openings throughout the state, updated in real time.
- Fresh Start Recovery Residence is now called Second Chance Recovery Residence. Still located in Freeport (at an unlisted address), this is a transitional sober house for men age 18+ who have completed detox and are receiving outpatient substance abuse treatment. It is a smaller residence with only 8 beds and up to 2 people in each room, compared to some larger residences that have more people living in one room.
- Five Towns Community Center, Inc. moved from Lawrence to Woodmere, still serving the Five Towns (Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Woodmere, Hewlett, and Inwood). Youth services have been discontinued but they are working on bringing them back. They provide general counseling, immigration and senior services, and they still run a food bank at their old location in Lawrence.
- Kaitlyn Schaal Mental Health Counseling moved from Mineola to Port Jefferson Station. She still offers telehealth in addition to in-person counseling for a multitude of issues, including suicide, domestic violence, bereavement, and more.
- Raffaele, Jacqueline – LCSW recently closed her office in Wantagh and now has a new location in Commack, in addition to offering telehealth counseling.
- Federation of Organizations has rebranded to RiseWell Community Services and expanded their services. They provide mental health care, substance abuse services, transitional housing, children’s services, senior services, financial services, psychiatric evaluations, and more.
- Missouri Hotlines – the direct number to reach the Missouri crisis hotline has been discontinued and they can now only be reached by calling 988. A few common area codes in the state have been added to the referral in case a warm transfer is needed.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.
